Poor knowledge on how to identify various tempos in music has been a long-lasting combat. One of the challenges facing teachers is how to motivate pupils to become involved in the learning process. Not only in learning process, also in a problem on how to make it successful, by the appropriate learning strategy used. This research aims to improve the skills of identifying various tempos in a song in music of random Grade V pupils.
Music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony and dynamics. Random House Kernerman Webster’s College Dictionary, (2011). Tempo is the speed of the Beat, usually expressed in Beats per Minute (BPM). Tempo can also be expressed verbally with such words as Slowly, Fast, Allegro, or Largo. Online Etymology Dictionary, (2011) Douglas Harper. The Pythagoreans believed that everything which existed had a voice and that all creatures were eternally singing the praise of the Creator. Man fails to hear these divine melodies because his soul is enmeshed in the illusion of material existence. When he liberates himself from the bondage of the lower world with its sense limitations, the music of the spheres will again be audible as it was in the Golden Age. Harmony recognizes harmony, and when the human soul regains its true estate it will not only hear the celestial choir but also join with it in an everlasting anthem of praise to that Eternal Good controlling the infinite number of parts and conditions of Being. The Pythagorean Theory of Music, Evinity Publishing INC, copyright (2011).
With the slow conceptual separation of the beat from the measure, it had become evident that musical notation lacked a certain type of specificity in its attempts to encode the unfolding of musical events. Theorist began to worry that printed music did not communicate tempo effectively: although the note shapes provided the durations relative to each other, there was no way of ensuring that the correct tempo of a piece could be understood from the meter signature and note values alone. Roger Mathew Grant, (2014).
Music education requires rapport from both the teacher and the learner. There should be a strong bond to aid in the discovery of talents and harnessing these. According to Questia (2015), in the field of education, the experiences of field study are unique. According to Cruz (2015), there is a need to satisfy and improve the teaching practices or competencies of MAPEH teachers so that the teachers themselves are able to interact better with the students. In that way the goal of music teaching will be achieved. Strategies in Teaching Music and Their Perceived Effectiveness, Alvin V. Nuqui et al, (2015).
We, teachers always make sure that all our pupils will be able to improve their knowledge and skills in identifying various tempos in a song in music and eventually can make their own song with various tempos. This school year 2015-2016, series of seminars were conducted by the Department of Education particularly in the Division of Davao City, about new trend of teaching for Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health. Sixto Babao Elementary School teachers were also one of the participants of the said seminars. With these seminars, teachers are now equipped with new strategy that can adjust with the needs of the learner. The teacher can rediscover their talent in playing musical instruments like guitar, ukulele and et cetera. Children can now discover their talent in playing string and percussion instruments. Contest among Davao City Division validated the Teachers rediscovery of talents and children’s new discovery of talents.
